Rug cleaning at home

Wool & synthetic rugs

Most everyday rugs are wool or a synthetic such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester. These usually respond well to a thorough vacuum, pre-treatment of marks and a careful extraction clean, and colours often look clearer afterwards.

Colour-run check first

Some rugs, especially brightly dyed or hand-made ones, can bleed colour when wet. We test a hidden corner before cleaning. If the dyes move, we stop and talk to you rather than carry on and risk the rug.

Fringes & edges

Fringes are often cotton and can yellow or brown if they are over-wetted, and many are already worn by vacuuming. We clean them gently and point out any existing wear or discolouration before we start.

Rugs that may need a specialist. Silk and viscose (often sold as “art silk” or “bamboo silk”) can stiffen, fluff up or brown when wet. Jute, sisal and seagrass can shrink or stain with water. Antique, fragile or valuable hand-knotted rugs deserve specialist care.

If your rug is one of these, we will say so when we see it or your photo, and may recommend a specialist rug cleaner rather than a home clean. We would rather lose the job than damage something you love.

On wooden, laminate or tiled floors we take care to protect the floor underneath. Rugs usually take a little longer to dry than fitted carpet because they are often thicker and sit on a cold hard floor, so leave furniture off them and keep foot traffic away until they feel dry to the touch.

Mattress cleaning

Over time a mattress collects dust, skin flakes and sweat, which is what dust mites feed on, plus the odd spilt drink or bedtime accident. We vacuum the mattress thoroughly, pre-treat marks and then clean it with extraction, keeping the moisture down so it is not left soaked.

A clean freshens the surface and lifts a lot of the dust and residue from it. It will not make a mattress allergen-free or fix sagging, and stains that have soaked deep into the foam or springs may lighten rather than disappear. We look first and tell you honestly what to expect.

Drying time. A mattress takes longer to dry than a carpet. Allow several hours, depending on how thick it is and how well the room is ventilated. Booking earlier in the day, opening a window or running the heating, and having spare bedding ready all help. Wait until it feels dry before you make the bed.

Good times to book a mattress clean

  • After a bedwetting accident, illness or a spilt drink, ideally while it is fresh.
  • When someone in the house is bothered by dust and you want to freshen the bed.
  • Before guests stay in the spare room, or when a child moves into a “new” bed.
  • Moving into or out of a furnished rental where the mattress stays.
  • Alongside a carpet or sofa clean, so it is all done on one visit.

Pet accidents on rugs and mattresses

Puppies, older dogs and cats often pick a rug or the bed. Blot up as much as you can straight away, pressing rather than rubbing, and avoid bleach or scented sprays that can set the stain. Fresh accidents usually respond best. Old urine that has gone right through a rug into the floor, or deep into a mattress, may not fully clear, and we will say so up front. Our pet stain and odour guide explains more.

How to get ready

  1. 1.Strip the bed. Take off sheets, duvet and any mattress protector or topper, and have clean bedding ready for later.
  2. 2.Clear the rug. Move small furniture, toys, plants and anything fragile off and around the rug where you can.
  3. 3.Find the label. If the rug or mattress has a care label, leave it showing. It tells us the fibre and any cleaning warnings.
  4. 4.Tell us about stains, pets and allergies. Roughly how old a mark is and what caused it helps us plan the right approach.
  5. 5.Keep pets in another room during the clean and until everything is dry.

Send us a photo. WhatsApp a picture of the rug or mattress (and its label, if it has one) to 07511 189666 with your postcode and any stains. It is the quickest way to find out whether it is suitable for a home clean and get a guide price.

Can you clean any rug?+

Most wool and synthetic rugs clean well at home. We check the label and the fibre and test a hidden corner for colour run first. Silk, viscose (art silk), jute, sisal and antique or fragile hand-knotted rugs can be damaged by a wet clean, so for those we may advise a specialist rug cleaner instead, and we will tell you before we start.

How long does a mattress take to dry?+

Longer than a carpet, because a mattress is thick and we have to keep the moisture down. Allow several hours, depending on the mattress and how well the room is ventilated. Booking earlier in the day, opening a window and having spare bedding ready all help.

Can you get urine and stains out of a mattress?+

Fresh accidents, sweat marks and spills often improve a lot. Old urine or blood that has soaked deep into the foam or springs may not fully clear, and some marks will lighten rather than disappear. We look first and tell you honestly what to expect.

What should I do before you arrive?+

Strip the bed, including any mattress protector. Move small furniture, toys and plants off the rug if you can, and keep pets in another room. If the rug has a label, leave it showing, and mention any stains, pets or allergies when you book.
