Why stairs and hallways get dirty first around Bordon

GU35 is surrounded by heathland and woodland. Dog walks and family strolls round Hogmoor Inclosure, Bordon Inclosure, the Deadwater Valley and the Green Loop are part of everyday life here, and the paths range from fine, sandy heath soil to woodland tracks that turn muddy after rain.

All of that comes home on boots, buggy wheels and paws, and the first carpet it meets is the hallway, then the stairs. Sandy grit works down into the pile and wears the fibres like sandpaper, while damp mud leaves a grey film that vacuuming alone won’t lift. The front edge of each stair tread and the walkway down the hall take every footstep, so they look tired long before the bedrooms do.

What we clean

Stair treads & risers

The front edge of each tread takes every footstep and goes grey first. We work step by step, treads and risers, getting into the corners at the back of each stair where grit collects.

Landings

The top of the stairs is where everyone turns towards the bedrooms and bathroom, so a dark patch forms on the landing that matches the wear on the stairs.

Hallways & entrance halls

The strip from the front door to the kitchen or lounge carries mud, sand and wet-weather grime from outside, and is often the first thing visitors see.

Hallway runners & rugs

Loose runners and hall rugs catch the worst of the mud. We check the fibre and colours first, and clean them at the published rug prices.

Prices for stairs, landings and halls

Stairs: £100 at our published guide price. Landings and hallways vary a lot from home to home, so tell us what you have when you book, or WhatsApp a photo, and we will confirm the price before any work starts. Heavy stains or unusual work may vary.

Most people book the stairs with the rooms they lead to, at the published prices: a living room (small/medium) £100 and bedrooms £60 each. Loose hallway runners and rugs are £100 for one rug, £125 for two and £175 for three. See all services and prices.

Our guarantee: carpets look visually better after cleaning, or you don’t have to pay. Worn-through pile, fraying stair nosings and permanent dye marks cannot be made new, and we will tell you honestly what a clean can achieve before we start.

Muddy boots and sandy paws: what to do between cleans

  1. 1.Let mud dry, then vacuum. Wet mud smears and soaks deeper into the pile. Leave it until it is completely dry, break up any crust gently with your fingers or a blunt spoon, then vacuum slowly in both directions.
  2. 2.Don’t rub or scrub. Rubbing frays the fibres and spreads a mark. Blot fresh spills with a clean white cloth or kitchen roll, working from the outside in, and avoid strong household sprays that can bleach or leave a sticky film.
  3. 3.Door mats inside and out. A coarse mat outside and an absorbent one inside the door catch most of the sand and grit before it reaches the hall carpet. Shake or vacuum them often, because a full mat stops working.
  4. 4.Boots off, dogs towelled. A boot tray by the door and an old towel for muddy paws save the hallway and the first few stairs. Wet coats and dog leads dripping onto the carpet leave tide marks too.
  5. 5.Vacuum the stairs properly. Use the crevice tool along the back of each tread and the brush on the front edge. Sandy grit acts like sandpaper on carpet fibres, so getting it out regularly helps stair carpet last longer.

Dog accidents on the stairs or landing? Our pet stain and odour guide explains what to do straight away and what a professional clean can and can’t fix.

What to expect on the day

We look at the carpet and any marks with you first, and say honestly what is likely to come out. Then we prepare the area, vacuum, pre-treat the grey traffic lanes and stains where needed, and use professional steam / hot-water extraction to rinse the dirt out rather than push it deeper. Stairs are cleaned one step at a time.

Before we arrive: clear shoes, bags, coats, post and toys off the hall floor and stairs, move any small hall furniture if you can, and keep pets in another room or the garden. Let us know about parking and where we can plug in.

Drying time. With proper extraction, most carpets are dry within a few hours in normal conditions, not days. Stairs are often the only way up and down, so walk carefully in socks or clean shoes while the treads are damp, keep pets off if you can, and open a window or put the heating on to speed things up. Booking earlier in the day gives the hall and stairs the most time to dry before the evening rush.

Flats & communal stairs

If you look after a block of flats or a shared house, we clean the carpeted communal stairs, landings and corridors only, not the rest of the building. Communal areas are quoted from photos or a visit rather than at the home prices. Our commercial carpet cleaning page explains how quoting works.

Landlords & moving out

The hall and stairs are often the first thing noted at a check-out inspection. Between tenancies we clean stairs, halls and rooms at the published prices, and a receipt or invoice is available on request. See our end of tenancy carpet cleaning guide.

Loose or worn stair carpet? If a stair carpet is lifting at the nosing or a gripper is coming away, tell us before we clean. We clean carpets, and we don’t refit or repair them, so a carpet fitter may need to look at it first.

Stairs and hallway cleaning FAQs

How much does it cost to clean stairs in Bordon?+

Our published guide price for stairs is £100. Landings and hallways vary a lot in size, so tell us what you have when you book, or WhatsApp a photo to 07511 189666, and we will confirm the price before any work starts. Heavy stains or unusual work may vary.

Can you clean the stairs and hallway at the same time as other rooms?+

Yes. Many people book the stairs alongside a living room (£100) or bedrooms (£60 each), at the published prices. The hall, stairs and landing are usually the dirtiest route in the house, so cleaning them with the rooms they lead to keeps the whole walkway looking even.

Should I scrub muddy footprints off the carpet before you come?+

No. Wet mud smears and pushes deeper into the pile if you rub it. Let it dry completely, break up any crust gently, then vacuum slowly in both directions. Blot fresh spills with a clean white cloth rather than scrubbing, and tell us about any marks when you book.

How long before we can use the stairs again?+

With proper extraction most carpets dry within a few hours in normal conditions. Stairs are often the only way up and down, so walk carefully in socks or clean shoes while the treads are damp, keep pets off if you can, and open a window or put the heating on to speed things up.

Do you clean communal stairs and corridors in blocks of flats?+

Yes, the carpeted communal stairs, landings and corridors only. Communal areas are quoted from photos or a visit rather than at the home prices, so see our commercial carpet cleaning page or send photos with the address and number of floors.

Will cleaning make worn stair treads look new?+

Cleaning lifts the grey, ground-in dirt that builds up on the front edge of each tread and along hallway walkways, and our guarantee is that carpets look visually better or you don’t have to pay. Flattened or worn-through pile, fraying nosings and permanent dye marks cannot be made new, and we will tell you honestly what to expect before we start.
